For my Financial Literacy class, I had the opportunity to job shadow at IdeaTek, a local fiber internet provider based in Buhler, Kansas. I spent time with technicians where I was able to observe how IdeaTek's internal systems are managed day-to-day, including network operations and VoIP infrastructure. A highlight of the experience was watching one of them configure an ONT for a live business installation, which gave me a firsthand look at how fiber connectivity is provisioned in a real-world environment.
This experience reinforced my interest in pursuing a career in networking and IT. Seeing how a professional team handles everything from routine maintenance to live equipment configuration helped me get to see more into the real industry. I came away with a much deeper understanding of how ISP infrastructure works behind the scenes, and I am grateful to everyone at IdeaTek who took the time to answer my questions and share their expertise.
